We have learned that a kennel takes time to build. Being flexible and navigating the unforeseen events is key. These events and some of the challenges we’ve faced has shaped our opinion on the breed, breeding and becoming a kennel.
Even though we have a female who is of breeding age doesn’t necessarily mean we have a kennel if we breed her. Putting two dogs together to make a litter can work and we could call that a kennel. However, putting the “right” two dogs together is the difference, all the work involved in selecting the dogs, the art and science, to us, is what makes the “true” kennel. Additionally, having the right mentors, a great veterinarian, and dog appropriate environment is a must.
Learning pedigrees and doing research on the dogs in front of us to learn what is behind them is also essential. Learning the dogs helps us know what we should expect in the litter; size, drive, type, temperament, etc. Attending shows and talking to other breeders is also beneficial to a kennel program. This is how we have networked and determined what is available that may be used to help further our kennel program as well as the breed. Shows are where we get to see the dogs in action; how they move, act and behave. It has been a great way for us to meet and learn from breeders who are where we want to be.
The experiences on this journey are the foundation of what Montessa Kennels is. We are the collectors of the bricks. From this collection we are building an AB powerhouse!! Thank you for coming to see us and we hope you join our family!!
